A seasonal podcast series exploring how humans need to adapt to the next transition

4 seasons. 4 important topics for the future economic landscapes.

There is something a bit radical about attaching my serious professional conversations to the rhythm of the seasons rather than to the normal quarterly business cycles or academic semesters. Both of those frameworks are essentially administrative, telling you when things start and finish. I wanted to do something different so as to bring a depth of meaning.

Each season brings an atmosphere, expectation, and us humans respond differently, almost unconsciously, as seasons change.

4 Seasons. 4 Topics. Tough Questions.

Summer invites exploration and it’s that time of the year when people are more open, more curious and more willing to follow an idea wherever it leads. Maybe it’s the sunshine and all that vitamin D that does it. It’s not accidental that the first topic in this new series is about Quantum Era Conversations. These are conversations at the start of something huge, and the questions dig deep and all that sunshine on our faces enables some mental capacity to think these things through. It’s lovely to introduce a new era of thinking at a time of the year when people are at their most receptive ~ enjoy!

Autumn sharpens our focus once summer is over and perhaps a little sadness to see the warmth disappear. That said, this change of season brings a different type of concentration and a readiness to go deeper into ideas we had while enjoying the ice creams. Placing OER Conversations in the autumn acknowledges that Open Educational Resources is a specialist conversation, one that asks more than just hearing about ‘free learning’ ~ it’s about paying attention to what this means for the listener and the creator. Autumn is the season for that kind of focused engagement.

Winter is the season of reflection and consolidation. Agility and Adaptation sits well in this season because winter forces us to sit with discomfort, cold temperatures and all, and to make sense of what has happened across the year. Now in Norway (where I work with an NGO), you can experience cold snowy conditions for up to 6 months from November to April. Thank goodness for plenty of reflection during ‘Hygge’. There is nothing superficial about winter or about agility as an increasingly important human capability for the future. The match between season and subject is not decorative. It is structural.

Spring is such a wonderful season because after the cold hibernation and chills of winter, things start to grow again. It is the season of decision making, what to plant, what will take root, what to perhaps leave behind. Spring is the right season to talk about Ethics in Emerging Tech. Ethics can be seen as being about growth and what we want to start work on. Bringing this topic into this season raises the issue about considered choices in a world increasingly being driven by tech automation and AI and gives us a framing that feels genuinely alive ~ just like the rebirth in Spring.
